The Airbnb Turnover Cleaning Checklist: 10 Steps to Five-Star Reviews
Every short-term rental host knows the turnover crunch. Guests check out at 11, new guests arrive at 3, and in that window the entire property has to go from "lived in" back to "brand new." No pressure — except that your next review, your rating, and your booking calendar all depend on it.

The hosts who consistently pull it off aren't superhuman. They work from a checklist, every single time, so nothing depends on memory on a busy Saturday. Here's the Airbnb turnover cleaning checklist we use, refined across rentals all over Northern DFW.
STEP 1: WALK THROUGH AND DOCUMENT FIRST
Before touching anything, do a full walkthrough. Check for damage, missing items, and anything left behind. Photograph anything unusual right away — if you ever need to file a claim, timestamped photos from before cleaning are your best friend. Open windows if weather allows and let the place breathe while you work.
STEP 2: STRIP AND START LAUNDRY IMMEDIATELY
Laundry is the longest task, so it goes first. Strip every bed and gather all towels, bath mats, and kitchen linens. Check linens closely for stains as you go, since a "clean" sheet with a mystery mark is one of the most common review complaints in the business. Serious hosts keep two or three full linen sets per bed so a slow dryer never delays a check-in.
STEP 3: KITCHEN, TOP TO BOTTOM
Wash, dry, and put away every dish, including the "clean" ones in the dishwasher, because guests will judge a single water spot. Wipe counters, backsplash, and cabinet fronts. Clean the microwave inside and out, check the oven for spills, empty the crumbs from the toaster, and go through the fridge shelf by shelf, removing everything the guests left. Run the garbage disposal. Restock coffee, filters, and whatever pantry basics you provide.
STEP 4: BATHROOMS LIKE A HOTEL
Scrub the toilet, sink, tub, and shower, and shine the fixtures and mirror until they're spotless — chrome and glass are where guests look for proof of cleanliness. Check the drain for hair, which is the single most-mentioned item in bad cleanliness reviews. Restock toilet paper (with a backup roll visible), soap, shampoo, and fresh towels folded consistently.
STEP 5: BEDROOMS AND FRESH BEDS
Make beds with fresh linens, hotel-crisp. Check under every bed — you will be amazed what turns up. Wipe nightstands and dressers, empty the drawers and closet of anything left behind, and confirm the right number of pillows and blankets, including spares.
STEP 6: DUST AND DETAIL THE LIVING AREAS
Dust all surfaces, including TV screens, shelves, and decor. Fluff and straighten cushions, fold throws the same way every time, and reset furniture to its standard position. Check under couch cushions for crumbs and lost items.
STEP 7: FLOORS LAST, EVERY ROOM
Vacuum carpets and rugs, then sweep and mop hard floors, working toward the door. Floors are always the final cleaning task in each room so you're not walking over your own work.
STEP 8: RESET THE ESSENTIALS
Empty every trash can and put in fresh liners with a spare at the bottom. Refill dish soap, laundry supplies, and paper products to your standard levels. Test that the TV, Wi-Fi, thermostat, and door lock all work, and reset the thermostat to your standard temperature. Check light bulbs, and check smoke detectors on a regular rotation.
STEP 9: STAGE IT
This is what separates a clean rental from a five-star one. Angle the throw pillows, set out the welcome items, align the remote controls, leave the guidebook where it belongs. Then take five seconds at the door of each room and look at it as a guest arriving with their phone camera out.
STEP 10: FINAL WALKTHROUGH, GUEST'S-EYE VIEW
Walk the whole property one more time, in order, sniffing as you go — smell is the first review a guest writes in their head. Lock up per your standard procedure and mark the unit ready.
WHEN THE CHECKLIST BECOMES A SECOND JOB
Run this list a few times and you'll see why so many hosts eventually hand it off: doing it right takes two to four hours per turnover, and it has to happen on the guests' schedule, not yours. One rushed turnover can cost more in a bad review than a year of professional cleaning.
